For the benefit of those who missed the talk at the meeting in August, here is a copy of the "poisonous plants" talk. Some plants can be harmful, even fatal, to ferrets. Generally speaking, most ferrets do not eat plants, so there is no need to immediately rip up your whole garden. Having said that, there are always a few ferrets who have not read the instruction book, and if they have, choose to ignore it. Some plants, and plant parts, can cause severe symptoms in ferrets including salivation, watering of eyes & nose, pani, vomiting, diarrhoea (which may be bloody), breathing difficulties, progressive paralysis and coma. Some can cause skin irritation. This list is of common garden plants which have the potential to case problems: Azalea - all parts are highly toxic Buttercup - all parts toxic in large quantities. can cause skin redness castor bean - highly toxic and causes severe skin irritation peaches / black cherry - wilted stems, stems and seeds are toxic daffodil - bulbs are toxic - digging ferrets beware! lantana - unripe berries are toxic and leaves cause skin irritation oleander - all parts highly toxic bromeliads - sap from leaves causes severe pain in mouth. pointed leaves cause mechanical damage to (eg) eyes. privet - berries are poisonous sago palm - toxic in large quantities water hemlock - all parts are poisonous wisteria - seeds are toxic in large quantities wandering dew - toxic in large quantities spider fern - all parts are poisonous cape lilac - berries are toxic |
