Need for salt??

Hi all

I was browsing the net recently and I came across a site that said that it was a good idea to provide a salt lick for your ferret. I thought about this for a while . . . after all you can't believe all the sites on the net!

Their apparent need for salt was questioned by the fact that Sid and Cordy - my two ferrets - insist on licking my arms and dad's arms after working in the garden. We presumed that they were after the salt in our sweat, but we aren't too sure.

SO: my point is, do ferrets need salt in their diet as a supplement?

Good question

Hi Catherine,
I'm not sure if they NEED salt in their diet, but depending on the diet you give them I spose it would vary...

My ferrets LOVE to lick me when I'm sweaty... sometimes I wonder if its a hygene thing for them- because I'm sweaty and dirty they feel the need to lick me and 'groom' me...

Do Sid & Cordy lick you any other time, or just when you're sweaty??

Hoping to see you all at the show!! (I have a huge soft spot for Sid & Cordy...)

Sid and Cordy's diet

Hi Miss (or Mrs.?) Ursh

I predominently feed Sid and Cordy chicken necks and whole prey baby chicks (coz mum says she wouldn't be able to hack weaner mice), Optimum kitten-bikkies and good old lactose free milk two or three times a week for a treat. We tried them on red meat but they didn't seem too interested, and they only ate the chicken wing tips once and after that no chicken wings at all.

Cordy licks my arms a lot; not necessarily just when I've been sweating and she adds in a few good hard nips as well (which I discourage). Sid usually doesn't bother about licking me too much, exept they both go for my hands when I've been using the bar soap. So we give them some cream for the extra fat which they want.
(that right Rucus??)

Yep, hopefully I'll be at the Ferret Show.

A quick word from mum

Hi again

Mum just wanted me to say that Sid and Cordy have settled in well and are spoiled and pampered in a very ferrety way.

Also dad brought home a 4-5 metre black pipe that they absolutely love to hide in.

Salt

Dear Miss Catherine,
After doing some research of my own, I have decided that there is only one All Mighty Being around here who will know the answer... so I have consulted with Rucus... he says to keep an eye out for his brilliant answer in the next issue of Ferreting Around :)

Looking forward to seeing you all at the show!!

Hi!!

Hi Ursh

Thanks for your message and for asking Rucus. Once I had some free time so I sat at the PC and read all of his 'Rucus Replies'!

Also I saw you on the Pet Show yesterday! I was so thrilled, although Sid and Cordy were asleep in the cage.
